Chickens are crucial to our farmstead. Not only do they provide nutritious eggs and meat; but they have an additional role as training for our livestock guardian dogs.
Our current breed of layer is the Isa Brown. These high production layers are equally friendly and are happy to follow us everywhere 🥰 we let them naturally go dormant in the winter; which some take advantage of; but for the most part these little hens have no plans of slowing down.

The photo at the very top of this page in the header, is of my grandmother as a child (the young girl standing) and my great-grandmother (holding the infant). Great-Grandma was a hardworking homesteader. She would have tremendous gardens each year. She would weed her garden with a fork. She would also can her surplus. I have been likened to her. It is such a complement.
